Chelsea Triangle
In collaboration with the Department of Transportion (DOT), CIC created an oasis of peace, by reclaiming a portion of bustling southbound vehicular traffic. In 2009, the DOT dedicated part of the existing roadbed of Ninth Avenue to a new triangular public plaza. The space is maintained and programmed by CIC.
Visitors to the Triangle can enjoy high quality movable furniture, including chairs, tables, and umbrellas- as well as large planters teeming with seasonal varietals that soften the space for relaxation. Each spring and summer, CIC activates the space with a variety of programming for the benefit of the area visitors. Thursday night Salsa classes have become a weekly neighborhood highlight. Wifi internet is available via access to the public network of the nearby Apple Store, which also offers the closest free public restroom facility near the park.
Chelsea Improvement Company received the 2010 Downtown Pinnacle Award from the International Downtown Association for its work in creating and managing the Chelsea Triangle.
