Self-Illuminated Street Signs
26 units installed
Standard New York City street signs are small and difficult to read at a distance, for pedestrians, bus riders, and car drivers, particularly after dark. To solve this problem, CIC designed, developed, and installed custom-designed self-Illuminated street signs with the following features:
- 60 miniature LEDs that light up the over-sized white lettering; as the New York Times noted in an article about the signs: "At night, the signs maintain a subtle glow that can be seen a block away."
- Easily readable upper and lower case writing.
- A larger sign that is more than twice the size of a standard New York City street sign.
- Building addresses at the top of each sign, combined with arrows. Old New York City street signs had a rounded hump that included the name of the cross street. After researching European and South American cities, the team included building addresses instead, because they provide useful wayfinding information.
